Illegal migrants, many of them Rohingya Muslims from western Myanmar and from Bangladesh, brave often perilous journeys by sea to escape religious and ethnic persecution and to seek jobs in Malaysia and Thailand, a regional human trafficking hub. |

 GENEVA (Reuters) - A senior U.N. human rights official said on Friday she had visited jailed former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed for two hours in detention and urged the government to take action on his flawed trial. "We kind of started to get signals that even the government recognises that something went wrong (with the trial)," Mona Rishmawi, chief of the rule of law, equality and non-discrimination branch of the U.N. Human Rights Office, told a regular U.N. briefing. "We would like to see this translate into concrete action." (Reporting by Tom Miles)

The east African nation has been rocked by days of protests triggered by President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term, a move opponents say violates the constitution and a peace deal that ended an ethnically charged civil war in 2005. Citing security fears, the government on Wednesday closed University of Burundi, a prestigious institution where football-fanatic Nkurunziza taught physical education in the mid-1990s. An official at the U.S. embassy in Bujumbura said late on Thursday that hundreds of students were "seeking a safe refuge" and had lined the street next to the embassy compound. |
| Music streaming service Grooveshark shuts down to settle infringement |

| Online music streaming service Grooveshark shut down its operations as part of its settlement agreement with major record companies, according to a message posted on the website, putting an end to a four-year legal battle. Grooveshark will wipe clean all of the record companies' copyrighted works and hand over ownership of its website, mobile apps and intellectual property, including patents and copyrights, the company said. We failed to secure licenses from rights holders for the vast amount of music on the service," Grooveshark said. Grooveshark and its parent Escape Media Group were not immediately reachable for comment. |
