A New York City plainclothes police officer was seriously injured when he was shot in the head on Saturday while attempting to question a man from his cruiser, and authorities said a suspect had been arrested and was in custody. The officer, identified by police as Brian Moore, 25, was in critical but stable condition following surgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center about four hours after the shooting, a hospital representative told reporters on Saturday night. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Moore was "very, very seriously injured." Local media reported the officer had been shot in the face. De Blasio said Moore came from a police family and has served with distinction. |
Bodies from Thai mass grave show no initial signs of violent death - police |
|
By Amy Sawitta Lefevre BANGKOK (Reuters) - Twenty-six bodies exhumed at a mass grave near a suspected human trafficking camp in southern Thailand do not bear signs of violent death, police said on Sunday, following initial forensic examinations at the site. Dozens of police and rescue volunteers trekked into the mountains on Saturday to a jungle camp in Songkhla province that authorities have linked to human trafficking and dug up 21 bodies. Five bodies were retrieved on Friday from the camp, which is a few hundred metres from Thailand's border with Malaysia, bringing the total to 26. "From initial forensic investigation at the site there are no marks on the bones or breakages that would suggest a violent death," Police Colonel Triwit Sriprapa, deputy commander of Songkhla Provincial Police, told Reuters. |
Seattle police say prepared for more protests after May Day clashes |
|
By Victoria Cavaliere SEATTLE (Reuters) - Seattle police said on Saturday they were preparing for more weekend protests after a May Day march that turned violent when crowds hurled bottles and wrenches at officers, who responded with pepper spray and flash grenades. Sixteen people were arrested in the violence, which erupted late Friday after a day of peaceful demonstrations to call attention to workers' rights, immigration issues and police treatment of minorities in the United States. Law enforcement was ready in the event of more protests, department spokesman Drew Fowler said. "However if there is physical violence or property destruction we will take action to protect public safety." Protesters annually assemble on May 1 as a day to focus attention on labor and immigration issues, but demonstrators in cities across the country also used the occasion to rally against police violence.

By Scott Malone and Ian Simpson BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Thousands of people took to the streets of Baltimore on Saturday as anger over the death of a young black man turned to hopes for change following swift criminal charges against six police officers. There was an upbeat mood at the march from the housing projects where 25-year-old Freddie Gray was arrested last month to a plaza in front of city hall where the city's chief prosecutor announced charges on Friday ranging from murder to assault in his death.
