Burundi president appears in capital, warns of Islamist threat

The east African nation was plunged into crisis after Nkurunziza said he was seeking a third term of office. Critics said the move would be unconstitutional, and there have been almost daily protests since Nkurunziza's announcement, stirring memories of an ethnically driven civil war that ended a decade ago. He did not elaborate, but Burundi contributes forces to an African Union peacekeeping mission battling al Shabaab in Somalia.




Nigerian military says it destroyed 10 Boko Haram camps

Nigeria's military destroyed 10 Boko Haram camps in the country's remote northeast on Sunday as it pressed on with an offensive against militant Islamist fighters now confined to a final hideout there, the army said. A military statement said troops had killed many Boko Haram militants in the Sambisa forest and captured several armoured vehicles and anti-aircraft guns. Thousands of people have been killed and several million displaced in a six-year Boko Haram insurgency that at its height saw the group control an area the size of Belgium. Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as 'Western education is sinful' in the Hausa language, has hit back with a series of raids over the last week, including two assaults on the regional capital Maiduguri.


Rapper Lionel "Chinx" Pickens fatally shot in New York

New York rapper Lionel Pickens, who goes by the name "Chinx", was shot and killed on Sunday while driving through the city's borough of Queens, police said. Pickens, 31, had multiple gun shot wounds to his torso and was pronounced dead at an area hospital. A 27-year-old male, who was also in the car and has not been identified, suffered gun shot wounds to his back and is in critical condition, police said. The investigation is ongoing," police said in a statement.


Serb kills son's new wife, own wife and in-laws a day after wedding

BELGRADE (Reuters) - One day after his son's wedding, a Serbian man shot dead his new daughter-in-law, his own wife and both women's parents before killing himself with his hunting rifle on Sunday, police said. "Disrupted family relations caused a big tragedy in the village of Martonos, near Kanjiza, in which seven people lost their lives on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.," said the statement quoted by the state news agency Tanjug. The village is about 185 kilometres (115 miles) north of Belgrade. Police said an investigation was underway and gave no further details. ...
