U.S. makes public ex-FIFA executive Blazer's 2013 plea agreement
10:07:38 PM
By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors on Monday made public their 2013 plea agreement with Chuck Blazer, revealing that the former FIFA executive committee member had been secretly providing authorities information for nearly two years before he admitted guilt. Prosecutors made the agreement with the key cooperating witness public after a federal judge in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday ordered it unsealed at the request of media outlets following the indictment of 14 FIFA officials and corporate executives. The document revealed that Blazer, the former general secretary of CONCACAF, football's governing body in North and Central America and the Caribbean, began providing prosecutors information as early as December 2011.

Members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party are seen in their party office at MeiktilaBy Andrew R.C. Marshall MEIKTILA, Myanmar (Reuters) - When religious violence erupted in Meiktila in central Myanmar two years ago, local politician Win Htein spoke up for the minority Muslims who bore its deadly brunt. Many of his fellow Buddhists have never forgiven him. At least 44 people were killed in March 2013 after a rampage by Buddhist mobs that Win Htein, a lawmaker for the National League for Democracy (NLD), tried to stop.  Led by Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD will soon contest a general election, and Win Htein admits that memories of his actions then could lose the party votes among Myanmar's Buddhist majority.

Republican U.S. presidential candidate and former Florida Governor Bush formally announces campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination during rally in MiamiBy Steve Holland MIAMI (Reuters) - Former Florida governor Jeb Bush vowed to fix a dysfunctional Washington as he began his U.S. presidential bid on Monday with an attempt to move out of the shadow of the White House legacies left by his father and brother. Bush, 62, is seeking to be seen as his own man and break out of a crowded field for the Republican presidential nomination to run in the November 2016 election. "We will take Washington - the static capital of this dynamic country - out of the business of causing problems," he said.

Security officers stand at the site of a suicide bombing in NdjamenaBy Moumine Ngarmbassa N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist suicide bombers killed at least 27 people in the Chadian capital N'Djamena on Monday in what appeared to be retaliation by Nigerian militant group Boko Haram for Chad's leading role in a regional offensive against it. At least 100 people were injured in two simultaneous attacks at around 9:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) on a police headquarters and training school. The government, which said that four Boko Haram fighters were among the 27 dead, announced a raft of measures to tighten security in the capital which serves as the headquarters for a 3,000-strong French mission - known as Barkhane - fighting militancy in the region.

Questions shadow U.S. strike on veteran Algerian jihadist in Libya
5:59:44 PM

Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar is seen in an undated picture from the U.S. Department of JusticeBy Patrick Markey ALGIERS (Reuters) - He lost an eye in Afghanistan, was earlier reported dead in fighting in Mali and now Libya says he was killed in a U.S. air strike at the weekend. U.S. officials have yet to confirm Libyan reports that Mokhtar Belmokhtar was killed in eastern Libya, saying on Monday only that the F-15 jet raid appeared to have succeeded but stopping short of confirming his demise. Doubts were well placed: Belmokhtar, who was in his early 40s, has been reported dead several times only to reappear in jihadist propaganda claiming responsibility for new attacks.

Bashir's flight shows ICC's weakness as it ventures into tougher cases
5:55:06 PM

President of the Republic of the Congo Sassou Nguesso looks on next to Sudan's President Bashir as they pose for photographers ahead of the African Union summit in JohannesburgBy Thomas Escritt THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The escape of Sudan's President from an arrest warrant demonstrates the International Criminal Court's weaknesses, just as it prepares to venture into even more politically-charged cases in places like the Palestinian territories and Ukraine. Omar al-Bashir, wanted by the ICC since 2008 on war crimes and genocide charges, left South Africa in defiance of a domestic court which ordered that he stay. Although South Africa is one of the ICC's 123 member states, required by treaty to assist it, Bashir spent two days avoiding arrest during a summit of regional leaders, many of whom believe the court has unfairly targeted Africans since being set up in 2003.
