| Egypt says militant leader killed in shootout - army statement | | | Egyptian armed forces killed a leading member of the country's Islamic State affiliate in a shootout outside his North Sinai home, the army spokesman said in a statement on Saturday. Selim Suleiman al-Haram, identified in the statement as a leader of the militant group known as Sinai Province, was asked to turn himself in by a group of soldiers that surrounded his house in the town of Sheikh Zuweid, the army said. Egypt is battling an increasingly brazen insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula that has killed hundreds of police officers and soldiers since the army toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in 2013 after mass protests against his rule. |
| Iran's parliament has no power over nuclear deal, top negotiator says | |  Iran's parliament does not have authority over the nuclear agreement signed with world powers last month, the Islamic Republic's top nuclear negotiator was quoted as saying on Saturday. The comments from Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's atomic energy agency, are the latest volley in a lengthy battle between Iranian officials supportive of the deal, and hardliners who are sceptical of it. The conservative-dominated parliament in June passed a bill imposing strict conditions on any nuclear deal, such as barring international inspectors from Iran's military sites.

| Bobbi Kristina Brown funeral expected to draw large crowds | |  By Rich McKay ALPHARETTA, Ga., (Reuters) - Scores of onlookers are expected to gather on Saturday near a Georgia church for the funeral of Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of late singer Whitney Houston. Brown's funeral at St. James United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, a northern suburb of Atlanta of about 60,000 residents, is private and will be closed to the public but that is not expected to deter media and members of the public who have been mourning her death. Brown, 22, died on Sunday at an area hospice, six months after suffering irreversible brain damage in a still unexplained incident at her Roswell, Georgia, home.

| Killing of Cecil pressures United States to protect African lion | |  The killing of Cecil the lion by a U.S. hunter in Zimbabwe has turned up the pressure on Washington to extend legal protection to the African lion by declaring it an endangered species, but some hunting advocates said that would lead to more regulations that could ultimately harm the big cats. The United States has the world's most powerful animal protection law, the Endangered Species Act, which has been extended by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to many non-U.S. species including the African elephant and cheetah. Adding the African lion to the U.S. list would not prohibit trophy hunting but it would require a permit from the service to import lions or their body parts to the United States.

"The maritime security environment is more complicated, and the undercurrents in the East and South China Seas have been gushing up," the paper wrote. China has become increasingly assertive in its dispute with Japan over a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea, while in the South China Sea it has been reclaiming land in waters where Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims.
