Chelsea Manning could face solitary confinement at military prison

Manning was convicted in 2013 of providing more than 700,000 documents, videos, diplomatic cables and battlefield accounts to WikiLeaks, in the biggest breach of classified materials in U.S. history. The former intelligence analyst, who was born a man but identifies as a woman, is serving a 35-year sentence at an all-male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.




Mali gunmen attack police post in capital

By Tiemoko Diallo BAMAKO (Reuters) - Two gunmen wearing turbans attacked a bus station in the Malian capital late on Wednesday, seriously wounding a police officer and another person, security sources and a witnesses said. An intelligence source earlier told Reuters that two police officers had died in the attack. The raid is likely to raise tension in Mali, a country that has seen a growing number of attacks by Islamists linked to al Qaeda and new militant groups that appear to be mounting a campaign against the U.N. mission and Mali's security forces.

Gunmen killed two police officers in an attack on the main bus station in the Malian capital Bamako on Wednesday, an intelligence officer said. "They opened fire on a police post at the bus station and there are two officers killed," the source said. Residents said the area around the bus station was cordoned off by security forces who searched cars along a main road nearby.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday. "Today I have accepted the resignation of my special representative Mr. Babacar Gaye, head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic, MINUSCA," Ban told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York.




Egypt frees pro-Mursi politician after two years pre-trial detention

Opposition politician Abul-Ela Mady was released on Wednesday after nearly two years of pretrial detention, Mady's son Ahmed said, two days after a court ordered him set free. Mady was a supporter of ousted President Mohamed Mursi, who was removed from power by the army following mass protests against his rule in 2013. Mady was detained on charges related to violence during protests between supporters and opponents of Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood in July 2013.
