Alabama police officer on trial for throwing Indian man to ground

(Reuters) - The federal trial of an Alabama police officer who faces a civil rights charge after being captured on video throwing an Indian man to the ground got underway on Tuesday with the start of jury selection, prosecutors said. Eric Parker, 26, is accused of using unreasonable force while serving as a police officer in Madison, Alabama during the Feb. 6 incident, which left an Indian grandfather badly injured. Sureshbhai Patel, who spoke no English, had been on a morning walk about two weeks after moving from India to northern Alabama to help his son's family care for a young child.


Lawsuit against Uber withdrawn over alleged India rape

The passenger, who reported being raped and beaten after hailing a ride with the Uber driver in Delhi last year, sued the online car service in a U.S. federal court in January, claiming the company failed to maintain basic safety procedures. Police hunt for suspects after officer shot dead north of Chicago

By Fiona Ortiz CHICAGO (Reuters) - Police with dogs and helicopters are searching woods and swampy areas north of Chicago for three armed suspects after a police officer was shot dead on Tuesday in the suburb of Fox Lake, a local law enforcement official said. Lake County sheriff's office Sergeant Christopher Covelli told Reuters the officer had died after being shot, but declined to identify him. Trains were stopped, roads were blocked and schools were on lock-down during the widespread manhunt that encompassed in a heavily wooded area about 40 miles north of Chicago, near the Wisconsin border, media reports said.

The former Brazil international has sent an email to Michel Platini, Musa Bility, David Nakhid and Chung Mong-joon, who have also declared their intention to run, saying that "FIFA deserves a debate at this preliminary stage". "We all agree that FIFA needs to evolve into a much better organisation, particularly in matters of democracy and transparency," said Zico in the email, a copy of which was sent to Reuters.




Bulgaria arrests suspect over 71 dead migrants - Austrian prosecutor

A truck in which 71 dead migrants were found is   parked at a customs building with refrigeration facilities in the village of   NickelsdorfBulgarian authorities have made an arrest in connection with the 71 dead refugees found in an abandoned refrigeration truck on an Austria highway last Thursday, the prosecutor's office in charge of the case said on Tuesday. "Austria has issued five European arrest warrants, all of which have now been fulfilled," said Verena Strnad from the prosecutor's office in Eisenstadt in the province of Burgenland where the truck was found. "A person in Bulgaria was recently arrested under one of the European arrest warrants," she said, declining to give any further details.

On Monday the same court rejected Davis' request for an emergency order allowing her to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples while she appeals a federal judge's order requiring her to issue them. Eight people filed a federal lawsuit against Davis in July challenging her office's policy of not issuing marriage licenses to any couples - gay or straight.

In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication, which can only be lifted by designated church officials. Francis described the "existential and moral ordeal" faced by women who have terminated pregnancies and said he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision".




Ex-Jared Foundation director to plead guilty in child porn case -lawyer

The former director of the foundation of former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle will file a guilty plea on Tuesday in the child pornography case against him, Taylor's attorney said. Russell Taylor, who was executive director of the Jared Foundation that focuses on child obesity, is charged in a federal complaint with production and possession of child pornography. Fogle, who became famous after losing a lot of weight on a diet based on Subway sandwiches, asked a federal judge on Aug. 19 to accept a guilty plea to charges of child pornography and traveling for illicit paid sex with minors.

Around 1,000 people waved tickets, clapping, booing and shouting "Germany! Germany!" outside the station. A refugee crisis rivalling the Balkan wars of the 1990s as Europe's worst since World War Two has polarised and confounded the European Union, which has no mechanism to cope with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of poor and desperate people.




Sri Lanka's Sirisena promises new era of clean government

The Aug. 17 attack on a Bangkok Hindu shrine killed 20 people and injured more than 100. Fourteen foreigners were among those killed in a blast the military government said was aimed at dealing a blow to an already ailing economy.
