India's dream of borderless trade grinds to a halt at checkpoints | | By Sandhya Ravishankar and Rajesh Kumar Singh WALAYAR/NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) - At the Walayar checkpoint in southern India, lines of idle trucks stretch as far as the eye can see in both directions along the tree-lined interstate highway, waiting for clearance from tax inspectors that can take days to complete. Delays are so bad that textile entrepreneur D Bala Sundaram has stopped sending his trucks to the international container terminal at nearby Cochin, instead diverting them hundreds of kilometres to a smaller regional port and onwards via Sri Lanka. "Our containers would get stuck for four to five days," said Sundaram, who runs a firm with an annual turnover of $150 million.

Japan ruling bloc makes final push on security bills despite protests | | By Linda Sieg TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government began a final push on Friday to enact contentious defence legislation that could let its troops fight overseas for the first time since World War Two, despite public protests and delaying tactics by the opposition. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the policy shift, which would mark the biggest change in defence policy since the creation of Japan's post-war military in 1954, is vital to meet new challenges such as from a rising China. Japan's ally the United States has welcomed the shift but the bills have sparked massive protests from ordinary citizens and other critics who say they violate the pacifist constitution and could ensnare Japan in U.S.-led conflicts. |

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has seen a surge in support since Scots voted 55-45 percent to reject independence in September last year, winning 56 of Scotland's 59 seats in the Westminster parliament at May's election. Hague court to rule in Lebanon witness intimidation case | | An international court in The Hague rules on Friday on whether a Lebanese reporter and her TV station jeopardised the case against the killers of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri by exposing alleged witnesses to his assassination. Defenders of journalist Karma Khayat say the charges raise questions about free speech and have accused the tribunal of seeking to intimidate the free press in order to prevent it from holding public institutions to account. Khayat and Al-Jadeed, her TV station, deny wrongdoing, saying they blurred out faces and distorted voices in a series of broadcasts in 2012 which they said examined whether the Special Tribunal for Lebanon was wasting public money. |
Iraqi militia leader condemns Turks' abduction, but slams Ankara policy | | The head of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, one of Iraq's fiercest Shi'ite militias, on Thursday denounced the abduction of 18 Turkish workers in Baghdad earlier this month but condemned Turkey as Iraq's biggest enemy. The Turkish captives appeared in a video days after their abduction, apparently held by an armed group that used a familiar Shi'ite Muslim slogan and threatened to attack Turkish interests in Iraq if its demands were not met. Iraqi security forces investigating the Turks' abduction raided the Baghdad headquarters of Kataib Hezbollah, another Iranian-backed Shi'ite militia, but without result. |
