Pope tells U.S. bishops crimes of sexual abuse should not be repeated

Pope Francis speaks to bishops during midday prayers   at St. Matthews in WashingtonBy Susan Cornwell and Philip Pullella WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Wednesday told U.S. Roman Catholic bishops that crimes of sexual abuse of minors by clergy should never be repeated, acknowledging the damage caused by years of scandal in the U.S. Catholic Church. In the remarks, delivered at Saint Matthews Cathedral in Washington on the first full day of his visit to the United States, the pope did not utter the words "sexual abuse" but referred to the scandal by talking about "difficult moments" and providing help for victims. "I know how much the pain of recent years has weighed upon you, and I have supported your generous commitment to bring healing to victims ... and to work to ensure that such crimes will never be repeated," Francis told the bishops, who applauded.

The 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals on Wednesday affirmed a ruling against a manufacturer of replica Batmobiles. "As Batman so sagely told Robin, 'In our well-ordered society, protection of private property is essential,'" 9th Circuit Judge Sandra Ikuta wrote for a unanimous three judge panel.




States should pay more into EU budget to deal with refugees -Orban

By Michelle Martin and Marton Dunai BAD STAFFELSTEIN, Germany/BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian leader Viktor Orban said on Wednesday he would propose that European Union states pay more into the EU budget to help cope with the refugee crisis and that Greece should allow other countries to defend its borders to slow the influx. Hungary lies in the path of the largest migration wave Europe has seen since World War Two and has registered more than 220,000 asylum-seekers this year. To stem the flow of migrants, Orban's right-wing government has built a fence on the Serbian frontier and is constructing another on Hungary's border with Croatia.


Weapons found inside U.N. vehicles on ship in Kenya - vessel owner

By Joseph Akwiri MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Weapons found by Kenyan police on a ship last week had been stashed inside a shipment of United Nations vehicles, the Norwegian company that owns the vessel said on Wednesday. Kenyan police said security agents on Thursday discovered firearms and drugs on the Norwegian-flagged Hoegh Transporter, which is docked at the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa. Hoegh Autoliners confirmed weapons were found inside some of the vehicles on its vessel, which was carrying a consignment from Mumbai to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO.


Nobel winners urge Obama to press Xi for fellow laureate's release

By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners have called on President Barack Obama to make a public call for the release of their fellow laureate, Liu Xiaobo, and his wife Liu Xia during a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. The laureates, led by South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, wrote to Obama, who is also a recipient of the Noble Peace Prize, on Sept. 2 to urge him to press the issue with Xi, the U.S. advocacy group Freedom Now said.
