Mexico arrests key figures in escape of drug lord Guzman
Thursday, October 22, 2015 2:30 AM
Mexican officials have arrested the "principal planner" and five other suspects behind the brazen jail break by the world's most-wanted drug boss, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, Mexico's attorney general said on Wednesday. The escape has caused a major embarrassment for President Enrique Pena Nieto, who has pledged to recapture Guzman. Attorney General Arely Gomez told a news conference that the escape's mastermind had repeatedly entered the maximum security prison where Guzman was held by taking advantage of the access afforded to his lawyers.

Golf and gluttony listed as violations as China tightens graft rules
Thursday, October 22, 2015 2:29 AM
China's ruling Communist Party has listed golf and gluttony as violations for the first time as it tightens its rules to prevent officials from engaging in corrupt practices, while also turning an even sterner eye against sexual impropriety. Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched a sweeping crackdown on deep-rooted graft since taking over the party's leadership in late 2012 and the presidency in 2013. Tales of graft and officials' high living, including extravagant banquets, have prompted widespread public anger because bureaucrats are meant to live on modest sums and lead morally exemplary lives.

At odds with Republicans, Hillary Clinton to testify on Benghazi
10:13:18 PM

Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton greets supporters at the conclusion of a "Latinos for Hillary" rally in San Antonio, TexasBy Jonathan Allen and Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Whether it's a fact-finding mission as Republicans insist or the political witch hunt that Democrats anticipate, the congressional committee investigating the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on Thursday will hear from Hillary Clinton, then the secretary of state and now the top candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton and many of her fellow Democrats have seized on the comments in recent weeks by Republican lawmakers as evidence that the goal of the Benghazi committee in the U.S. House of Representatives was to hurt her front-runner status in the campaign for the November 2016 election. Clinton's appearance follows months of unflattering reports about her use of a private home email server for her State Department work.

Five arrests after trouble before City v Sevilla match
9:08:56 PM

Manchester City v Sevilla - UEFA Champions League Group Stage - Group D(Reuters) - Greater Manchester Police (GMP) arrested five people, three of them Polish football fans, when a brawl broke out in the city centre before Manchester City played Sevilla in a Champions League group match on Wednesday. One man was treated for a head injury and GMP confirmed the arrests in a statement on its Twitter feed. It is unclear what sparked the violence, although reports in Spain suggested fans of Polish club Slask Wroclaw sparked the trouble following violence when Slask and Sevilla met in the Europa League in 2013.
