Eric Parker, 27, was retried on accusations that he used unreasonable force while working as a Madison, Alabama, police officer. During his first trial in September, another jury in Huntsville, Alabama, federal court also deadlocked, resulting in the first mistrial. |

Ponta is facing trial for corruption and he was already under pressure to quit from the opposition and President Klaus Iohannis, who defeated him in last November's presidential election. "Last night, Romanians' outrage became true revolt," Iohannis said, referring to the more than 20,000 people who took to the streets in the capital on Tuesday, as well as protests elsewhere.

| Obama not taking anything off table on closing Guantanamo - White House | |  The White House is considering all options in the effort to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, spokesman Josh Earnest said on Wednesday when asked whether the Obama administration would act without congressional approval. Earnest said the White House still hopes to close the prison "in a timely manner." President Barack Obama had vowed to close Guantanamo, which holds 112 inmates suspected of terrorism, by the time he left office in 2017 but members of Congress have blocked the move.

| France ends law banning blood donation from homosexual men | | | France has decided to end a more than 30-year old law that banned homosexual men from donating blood, a measure originally put in place to stop the spread of diseases such as HIV. Health Minister Marisol Touraine said on Wednesday discrimination against potential blood donors on the basis of sexual orientation was unacceptable because it presumed that homosexual men all had HIV. After a review of the measure since 2012, Touraine opted to lift the exclusion that has been in place since 1983 and was subsequently reinforced three times. |

The 29-year-old researcher, who filed charges against the former chief of a U.N. climate panel in February, said The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) - where Pachauri was Director General - had discriminated against her. "TERI failed to uphold my interests as an employee, let alone protect them," the woman wrote in an email sent to Dinesh Varma, head of TERI's human resource department, and circulated to the media.

| Bahrain says foils plans for attack by Iran-linked terrorist group | | | Bahrain said on Wednesday it had arrested 47 members of a group believed to have links to "terrorist elements in Iran" who it said were planning to carry out attacks in the coming days. | German police bust people smuggling ring | | | German police on Wednesday broke up an international ring of people smugglers whose members used falsified documents to bring foreigners into Germany, mainly by air, for a fee of up to 10,000 euros ($10,859.00) per person. A police statement said that 17 suspected members of the ring had been arrested in raids in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Baden-Wuerttemberg. The ring provided foreign nationals, mostly Syrians and Lebanese, with falsified documents such as residency permits and travel documents. |

There is a large-scale corruption investigation at soccer's FIFA while athletics is fighting a desperate public relations rearguard battle in the face of continual doping issues. According to French news channel iTELE, the investigation is focused on suspicions that payments were made in return for not revealing widespread doping of Russian athletes.

| Palestinian driver shot dead after ramming Israeli officer - Israeli police | |  Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian driver in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday after he rammed into an Israeli border policeman, critically wounding him, police said. "A border policeman was critically wounded in a ramming attack near (the city of) Hebron," police said in a statement. At least 68 Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli forces, including 41 who Israel says were attackers.

| One of two black boxes from Russian plane damaged - Egyptian ministry | |  Investigators have extracted and validated the contents of the flight data recorder, one of two so-called black boxes recovered from the Russian airplane that crashed in Egypt, Egypt's Civil Aviation Ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry said the second black box which contains the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was partially damaged and much work was required to extract data from it. Earlier, Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate dismissed in an audio message doubts that it had downed the Russian passenger plane over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all aboard, and said it would tell the world how it did so in its own time.

"We are now starting to see for the first time some pullback of Russian and separatist weapons," Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland told a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives. | As Chile's reforms gather pace, Bachelet's approval ratings rise | |  By Rosalba O'Brien SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Approval levels for Chilean President Michelle Bachelet have begun to rebound as the socialist leader puts scandals behind her and her program of reforms gathers momentum. A monthly poll by GfK Adimark on Wednesday showed her approval rating at 29 percent, up 4 percentage points from a month ago to the highest since May. Chile is one of Latin America's most prosperous and stable economies but there are also big inequalities in income and education. Bachelet, who returned to power for a second term in March 2014, was elected on promises that she would tax and spend in order to close the gap.
