Ninth person arrested in Belgium over Paris attacks

The man was arrested earlier this week but prosecutors kept it quiet in order not to alert potential accomplices, a spokesman for federal prosecutors said. Belgian newspaper DH reported that the man arrested had been contacted by Hasna Ait Boulahcen, who gave shelter to the presumed ringleader of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud.




China waste site firm "urged to stop work" days before landslide

Two people died and more than 70 people were missing after Sunday's landslide at an industrial park in Shenzhen, a boomtown near Hong Kong, in China's latest industrial disaster. The man-made disaster has raised questions about China's industrial safety standards and lack of oversight.




China jails former newspaper group president for fraud

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese court on Thursday jailed the former president of a major Chinese news organization for four years after finding him guilty of extortion and fraud. Shanghai prosecutors last year arrested Shen Hao, president of 21st Century Media Ltd. and publisher of influential business daily 21st Century Business Herald, on counts of extortion, bribery and misappropriation of funds. The Shanghai court found that Shen demanded money from companies in exchange for covering up bad news or for reporting positive stories, state news agency Xinhua reported. ...


Myanmar men sentenced to death for murder of British tourists in Thailand

The battered bodies of backpackers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were found on a beach on the island of Koh Tao in September 2014. Police said Witheridge, 23, had been raped and bludgeoned to death.




Japan seeking information after reports Japanese journalist held hostage in Syria

Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said this week it had received information that an armed group holding journalist Yasuda Jumpei hostage had started a countdown for an unspecified ransom to be paid and had threatened to execute or sell him to another group if their demands were not met. RSF said in a statement on its website that Yasuda was kidnapped in July by an armed group in an area controlled by the militant Nusra Front, al Qaeda's Syria wing, shortly after entering Syria earlier that month.




Script for Tupac Shakur biopic peddled in celebrity hacking case - studio

A production company behind an upcoming biopic about hip hop artist Tupac Shakur acknowledged on Wednesday that the film's script was among those allegedly peddled by a Bahamian man who was arrested for hacking celebrities' email accounts. Alonzo Knowles, 23, is being held without bail after a Tuesday appearance in Manhattan federal court on criminal copyright infringement and identity theft charges. Among the information that Knowles allegedly hacked was a recently finished script for "All Eyez On Me," a biopic of Shakur, who died in a 1996 shooting, according to Greg Mielcarz, executive vice president of marketing and publicity at Los Angeles-based Morgan Creek Productions, the studio making the biopic.
