Current National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello added that the government would appoint 12 new supreme court judges, among other "tasks," before Dec 31. The new legislature, two-thirds of which will be made up of opposition politicians, is set to begin work in January.




Australia, SE Asia need to "re-double" efforts to avoid Paris-style attacks

Australia and Southeast Asia must re-double efforts to share intelligence and make sure Paris-style terror attacks can't be replicated in the region, Australian Justice Minister Michael Keenan said on Wednesday. Hundreds of Indonesian Islamic State sympathisers and some Malaysians and Singaporeans are believed to have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq. Southeast Asia faces the risk of attack when they return, Malaysia has said.

(Reuters) - A married couple who killed 14 people in a California shooting rampage the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism borrowed about $28,000 from an online lender, a sum deposited into their bank account about two weeks before the attack, sources said on Tuesday. Disclosure of the unsecured loan the husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, took out from San Francisco-based Prosper, a peer-to-peer lending service, offered a new glimpse into the money trail under scrutiny by investigators of last week's mass shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has described Farook, the U.S.-born son of Pakistani immigrants, and his Pakistani-born wife, Tashfeen Malik, 29, as a couple "radicalized" by Islamic extremist ideology.




McCullum 'comfortable' with Cairns trial evidence

McCullum was one of two former team mates, along with self-confessed matchfixer Lou Vincent, who gave evidence against Cairns in the trial, accusing his predecessor as test skipper of twice asking him to fix matches.

Lynch WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The New York Attorney General is investigating why so-called "speculative" tickets to a series of upcoming Bruce Springsteen concerts were listed for sale on websites owned by eBay and two other companies, according to letters seen by Reuters. The Dec. 7 letters, sent by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office to eBay-owned StubHub Inc., Connecticut-based TicketNetwork Inc. and Illinois-based Vivid Seats Ltd., order them to immediately remove any listings by ticket re-sellers for speculative Springsteen tickets. It also asks company executives to meet with investigators in the Internet bureau to answer questions about how they identify and combat speculative ticket sales.

One of the officials told CNN the two conspired in 2012 and a specific target was considered. Neither of the officials could say how serious the plotting got, CNN said.

Gun supplier in California attack connected to shooters' family by marriage - documents

(Reuters) - The man who supplied guns to the couple who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, last week is connected to the shooters' family by marriage, state documents show. Enrique Marquez, whose home was raided over the weekend and who is being questioned by federal investigators, was married last year to Mariya Chernykh, whose sister is the wife of Raheel Farook, brother of one of the shooters, Syed Rizwan Farook. The family connection, revealed in marriage documents seen by Reuters, adds another element to the relationship between Farook and Marquez.

In pattern, gun maker shares surge after California shooting

By Noel Randewich SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of U.S. gun makers have surged after the massacre of 14 people in California last week, following a pattern that has grown more common in recent years as high-profile mass shootings spur firearms sales as well as calls for gun control measures. Since last Thursday's shooting in San Bernardino, California, the deadliest burst of U.S. gun violence in three years, Smith & Wesson shares have surged about 17 percent, compared to the S&P 500's 1 percent loss. Sturm Ruger shares have gained about 10 percent.

Online lenders such as privately held Prosper and market leader Lending Club Corp are part of a small, but fast-growing industry. Shooter Syed Rizwan Farook took out the loan from Prosper around the middle of last month, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Cuba returns U.S. fugitive in sign of renewed diplomacy

By Zachary Fagenson MIAMI (Reuters) - An American man wanted on firearms charges was brought back from Cuba on Tuesday, marking the first fugitive returned since the two nations restored diplomatic ties this year, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Shawn Wegmann, 38, of Indiana removed an electronic monitoring bracelet in October and attempted to enter Cuba on board a 13-foot Boston Whaler boat that was reported stolen from a Florida marina, according to officials. While Cuba has returned fugitives before the normalization of relations between the two countries, U.S. authorities hope for further cooperation.

Volkswagen diesel civil suits to be heard in California

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation said the cases will be heard by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in the Northern District of California. Volkswagen and the U.S. Department of Justice had both urged the panel to send the cases to Detroit, while plaintiffs' lawyers from across the country suggested a range of venues, from Illinois and Ohio to New Jersey and Massachusetts.
