German gov't rejects "absurd" remark of populist party leader on shooting migrants

Migrants wait for their registration in front of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees at Berlin's Spandau districtBy Joseph Nasr and Michael Nienaber BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel's government rejected on Monday as "absurd" a suggestion from the leader of an increasingly popular opposition right-wing party that police be given powers to use firearms against illegal migrants. Support for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has jumped amid deepening public unease over Merkel's open-door policy for refugees from Syria and elsewhere after some 1.1 million people entered Germany last year. Asked about AfD leader Frauke Petry's suggestion on the use of firearms against migrants, Merkel's chief of staff Peter Altmaier said: "This proposal is inhuman and absurd.

If convicted of sexual assault, he faces a maximum jail sentence of 18 months, while a choking charge carries a potential life sentence.

Flowers and posters are placed in the square between the city cathedral and the railway station in CologneBy Michelle Martin COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - As Cologne gears up for its annual carnival, authorities said on Monday they would put more police on duty, light dark areas and use video surveillance to make people feel safe after assaults on women at New Year shocked the nation. More than any other incident, the attacks fuelled growing criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to open Germany's doors to more than a million migrants. Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker said city officials had done everything they could to make people feel secure during the Feb. 4-9 carnival but safety could never be 100 percent guaranteed.

German-Russian ties feel Cold War-style chill over rape case
5:27:42 PM

Activists and supporters of the 'International Convention of German Russians' protest against sexual harassment by migrants in front of the Chancellery in BerlinBy Andreas Rinke and Paul Carrel BERLIN (Reuters) - Moscow's intervention in an alleged rape case involving a German-Russian girl has heightened suspicions in Berlin that it is trying to stir up trouble, with a view to weakening Chancellor Angela Merkel. The case of the 13-year-old, named only as Lisa F., became the focus of political intrigue after she told police that she had been kidnapped in east Berlin last month by migrants who raped her while she was held for 30 hours. Senior German officials believe Russia is trying to erode public trust in Merkel using immigration, an issue which has badly damaged her opinion poll ratings and divided European Union governments over who should accommodate asylum seekers pouring in over the past year.

U.N. Human Rights High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein addresses a media briefing in Geneva, SwitzerlandBy Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations' top human rights official urged Turkey on Monday to investigate the shooting of unarmed people 10 days ago in its largely Kurdish southeast and said any members of the security forces committing rights abuses should be prosecuted. Southeastern Turkey has seen its worst violence in two decades since a 2-1/2-year ceasefire with militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) collapsed last July, reviving a conflict in which 40,000 people have been killed since 1984. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein was referring to an incident on Jan. 20, in which 10 people were wounded in the town of Cizre when their group, including two opposition politicians, came under fire while rescuing people hurt in earlier clashes.

New National League for Democracy lawmakers arrive for the opening of the new parliament in NaypyitawBy Timothy Mclaughlin and Hnin Yadana Zaw YANGON (Reuters) - Taking his seat in Myanmar's parliament for the first time, Myo Zaw Aung, a one-time bodyguard for Aung San Suu Kyi, acknowledged the dozens of new lawmakers from her National League for Democracy (NLD) had a daunting task ahead. "Most of us have little experience in government, but we are very determined to make it work." The new NLD members flooded the imposing parliament building on Monday, many clad in the traditional burnt orange tunics that have been worn by the party for decades and overwhelmed the olive green of the army bloc as the freshly elected legislature met for the first time since Suu Kyi's massive poll win in November. Expectations are sky-high after the NLD won about 80 percent of elected seats, crushing the junta-linked ruling party and setting the stage to replace the semi-civilian government of President Thein Sein.

Russian President Putin attends a meeting with members of the All-Russia People's Front in StavropolBy Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's most loyal allies has stirred fear among Kremlin critics by releasing a video showing opposition leader Mikhail Kasyanov in the cross-hairs of a sniper's rifle. The video, released on social media by Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed leader of Chechnya, follows weeks of increasingly hostile rhetoric towards the liberal opposition from the former rebel fighter, who has called Putin's opponents "enemies of the people" who deserve to be tried for sabotage. The video, which Kasyanov, a former prime minister, said he regarded as "incitement to murder", was issued weeks before the first anniversary of the murder of Boris Nemtsov, another prominent liberal opposition leader.
