China has been under increasing pressure to halt pollution of its air, soil and water caused by more than three decades of economic growth, and at this year's full session of parliament it promised to cap energy use and draft new laws to decontaminate its soil. Beijing frequently features near the top of the list of China's most polluted cities as emissions from vehicles and heavy industry combine with weather conditions to raise smog levels.

Mallya, a former billionaire who built his fortune on Kingfisher Beer and a current member of parliament, left India last week. More than a dozen banks - led by the country's biggest, State Bank of India - had appealed to the country's Supreme Court asking that he be prevented from leaving.

The vote in the lower house for the presidential nominee was never in doubt as Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) holds an outright majority following a crushing electoral win in November. NLD candidate Htin Kyaw received 274 of the 317 votes cast.

Das JALESWAR (Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vowed to disenfranchise millions of Muslim immigrants in Assam, waging a polarising election campaign in a bid to form its first government there. In campaign rallies in Assam, officials of the BJP have also promised to identify and deport younger illegal migrants, in response to rising discontent among the state's Hindus. When Assam elects a state legislature in April, an estimated 10 percent of its 20 million voters will be Muslims who have migrated since the 1950s from the former East Pakistan, later Bangladesh, and gained Indian citizenship.

| BSI's Singapore-based banker linked to 1MDB leaves the bank - spokeswoman | |  A Singapore-based private banker, who handled Swiss private bank BSI's relationship with embattled state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), has left the bank, an external spokeswoman said on Friday. Yak Yew Chee, who was a senior vice president at BSI Singapore, is facing a criminal probe in Singapore on money laundering charges linked to 1MDB. Yak did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

| Former Russian press minister died in U.S. of blunt force injuries | | | By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Russian Press Minister Mikhail Lesin, who was found dead in a Washington hotel room last year, died of blunt force injuries to the head, U.S. authorities said on Thursday. Lesin who once headed the state-controlled Gazprom-Media, also had blunt force injuries to the neck, torso, arms and legs, the U.S. capital's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Metropolitan Police Department said in a brief statement. According to a police incident report, Lesin, who was President Vladimir Putin's press minister from 1999 to 2004, was found unconscious on Nov. 5 on the floor of his room in the Doyle Washington Hotel. |
