Two people, including one suspect, dead in Houston shooting - police

(Reuters) - One suspect was dead and a second was wounded in a shooting in Houston, while another person was found dead in a vehicle, police said on Sunday. The Houston Police Department said in a Facebook post that the shooting situation was still active and advised residents to stay away from the area.


Mexican soccer player, striker for Olympiakos, kidnapped: media reports

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Alan Pulido, a Mexican striker for the Greek soccer team Olympiakos, was kidnapped in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, authorities said according to local media reports on Sunday. A relative of Pulido also told Milenio TV that he had been kidnapped. Pulido was kidnapped after leaving a party in the state capital of Ciudad Victoria, media outlets reported. Five U.N. soldiers killed in central Mali attack

Five United Nations peacekeepers were killed and one other seriously injured in an ambush in central Mali on Sunday, the United Nations said. A convoy of soldiers in the U.N. Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was attacked 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Sevaré, the U.N. said. "I condemn in the strongest terms this despicable crime," said MINUSMA head Mahamat Saleh Annadif, adding that it constituted "crimes against humanity under international law".


Between 700-900 migrants may have died at sea this week - NGOs

"We will never know exact numbers," Medecins San Frontieres said in a Tweet after estimating that 900 had died during the week. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said more than 700 had drowned.




Jordan's King Abdullah dissolves parliament, names caretaker PM

The king accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour before appointing Mulqi by royal decree. Jordan traditionally votes according to tribal and family allegiances but parliament amended the electoral laws in March in a move government sources and political analysts say will lead to more candidates from political parties vying for votes.

People in the southern Delta region, where oil giants such as Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron operate, have for years complained about the oil industry's pollution and of economic marginalisation by the state. Some have taken up arms and a recent surge in attacks on oil installations has cut Nigeria's oil output to a 20-year low.




U.N. concerned about rising political tensions in Cambodia

The United Nations on Sunday voiced alarm at the escalating political tensions in Cambodia, including attempted arrests of politicians, amid allegations from the opposition that Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party is persecuting it. Last week Hun Sen said Cambodia's next election will be in July 2018. Meanwhile leaders of the opposition are facing legal charges they say are politically motivated to stop them challenging the veteran premier in the vote.

To the sound of Bowie's "Space Oddity," up to 300 people attended the inauguration of the mural, which bore the inscription: "Fashion changes, but you'll always be my heroes." The mural -- 13 metres (43 feet) high and 10.5 metres (34 feet) wide -- is painted on a building on the university campus, a short distance from the street once known as Sniper Alley, and is intended to symbolise the way Bosnia has changed since the end of the 1992-95 war. Sketches were done by Marvel comics illustrator Enis Cisic and turned into the mural by painter Zoran Herceg, who took a month and half to complete it.

Senior reformist Mohammad Reza Aref, who had been the top vote-getter in the parliamentary race in Tehran, received 103 votes, state media said.




Turkey's new prime minister wins vote of confidence in parliament

Turkey's Prime Minister Yildirim reads his   government's programme at the Turkish parliament in AnkaraTurkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's government on Sunday won a vote of confidence in parliament as well as approval for his legislative programme, parliament speaker Ismail Kahraman said. Yildirim is a close ally of President Tayyip Erdogan and a co-founder of the ruling AK Party. Yildirim's appointment marks another step in Erdogan's plan to create a full presidential system in Turkey.




French PM says he will not bow to labour reform protestors

The hardline CGT union has organised street protests, train strikes and refinery blockades to pressure the government to scrap plans that would make it easier for companies to hire and fire workers. "If we gave in to the street and to CGT because we were obsessed over the short term by 2017 (presidential elections), we would lose everything," Valls was quoted as saying by the French newspaper.
