Despite Brexit noise and migrant woes, Turkey committed to EU ties

Turkey's relations with Europe have soured over demands it amend its anti-terrorism laws on human rights grounds under a deal to curb migration, prompting President Tayyip Erdogan last month to angrily warn: "we're going our way, you go yours". Countering warnings from Britain's "Out" campaign of dire consequences if the largely Muslim nation of 78 million joins, Prime Minister David Cameron, once a staunch advocate of Turkish accession, joked that it did not look as if it would happen until the year 3000.




Consoling Orlando victims, Obama recasts somber role

The White House said Obama's visit to the Florida city where Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to Islamic State during a three-hour rampage through the Pulse nightclub, was not about the gunman but comforting the victims of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. "This will be, I think, an emotional trip," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, saying Obama would offer condolences on behalf of the nation.

Omar Mateen's wife, Noor Salman, knew of his plans for what became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, said the law enforcement source, who has been briefed on the matter. "I cannot comment on the outcome or the outcome of that investigation." CNN, citing law enforcement officials, said a U.S. attorney planned to present evidence to a federal grand jury to determine whether charges would be brought against Salman.




Ally of drug lord 'El Chapo' arrested in Mexico after U.S. prison time

Hector 'El Guero' Palma was a former partner of Guzman, the head of the powerful Sinaloa cartel who is now fighting extradition to the United States from a Mexican prison. Palma was rearrested by officials on his repatriation to Mexico for his "probable responsibility in two homicides" that occurred in the small Pacific state of Nayarit, according to a statement from the attorney general's office.

The wealthy and influential Dhammakaya temple is at the centre of religious tensions and its 72-year-old abbot, Phra Dhammachayo, is accused of conspiring to launder money by accepting stolen cash from a credit union. Thursday's planned raid is the latest development in a stand-off between investigators and the Buddhist sect after Dhammachayo, citing ill health, failed to appear at a police station to answer graft charges last month.




Boy's body found after alligator attack at Florida Disney resort

(Reuters) - Police divers on Wednesday recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy who was grabbed by an alligator in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said he and a Catholic priest had informed the family that the boy's body had been recovered near where he vanished and was completely intact. Wildlife officials earlier captured and killed five of the reptiles from Seven Seas Lagoon and opened them up to look for traces of the boy.




Flippant and cursing, Orlando gunman appeared in documentary

Mateen was filmed secretly by the makers of the documentary, "The Big Fix," as he worked as a security guard at a beach at night in Pensacola, Florida where the clean up was taking place.
