Peru scrutinizes pacts between police and miners after clash

Peru is scrutinizing paid security services that federal police provide to mining companies following a deadly protest by local residents that suspended exports from one of the world's biggest copper mines, the government told Reuters on Monday. The three-month-old centrist government of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is also talking with the Red Cross about setting up a program to teach police to manage protests better, Rolando Luque, director of the National Office of Dialogue in Kuczynski's Cabinet, said in an interview.

Kardashian withdrew the lawsuit filed this month in New York against U.S. celebrity gossip site MediaTakeOut, according to a court document. The federal lawsuit was withdrawn without prejudice, meaning Kardashian could refile it.




Gunmen kill 48 in attack on police academy in Pakistani city of Quetta

"Forty eight bodies have been brought to the hospital," said Wasim Beg, senior doctor at Quetta's Civil Hospital. Most of the dead were police cadets.

Twenty dead, more than 100 wounded, in Pakistan police academy attack - official

Pakistani troops deploy outside the Police Training   Center after an attack on the center in QuettaGunmen stormed a Pakistani police training academy in the southwestern city of Quetta late on Monday night, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 100, officials said. Some 200 trainees are stationed at the facility, officials said, and some had been taken hostage. Mir Sarfaraz Bugti, home minister of Baluchistan province, of which Quetta is the capital, confirmed early on Tuesday that five to six gunmen had attacked a dormitory inside the training facility while cadets rested and slept.




Four killed in anti-U.N. unrest in Central African Republic - U.N.

Four civilians were killed and 14 other people injured in Central African Republic on Monday when U.N. peacekeepers exchanged fire with armed men during a protest against the U.N. military presence, the United Nations said. The clashes occurred as hundreds of protesters gathered to call for troops from the U.N. mission (MINUSCA) to leave the country. A Reuters witness saw protesters, carrying anti-U.N. posters, throwing stones and shouting at the troops who responded with warning shots.


Venezuela, opposition announce dialogue as protests brew

"At last we are installing a dialogue between the opposition and the legitimate government," Maduro said from Rome, after a meeting with Pope Francis who urged him to alleviate Venezuelans' suffering during a brutal economic crisis. The opposition says Maduro is an inept autocrat who must leave office before the crisis worsens while the former bus driver and union leader vows not to be pushed out by what he calls a power-hungry elite seeking a coup.




South America's CONMEBOL seeks financial redress from ISM

South American football's governing body CONMEBOL has opened legal proceedings in New York against International Soccer Marketing Inc (ISM) in a bid to recover $18 million paid in commission for exclusive broadcasting rights, it said on Monday. It was the first of several legal actions CONMEBOL was planning after a U.S.-led investigation last year unearthed widespread fraudulent deals at the heart of world soccer body FIFA, the Asuncion-based CONMEBOL said in a statement. CONMEBOL said it based its action on the fact ISM's owners had admitted in a U.S. court they had paid bribes to former CONMEBOL directors over two decades for commercial rights to the Copa Libertadores, the equivalent of Europe's Champions League.

Serbia's Prime Minister Vucic addresses the   United Nations General Assembly in New YorkSerbia has detained a number of people over a suspected plot to sway the outcome of Montenegro's Oct. 16 election, the Serbian prime minister said on Monday, citing "undeniable and material" evidence found by his country's security services.Aleksandar Vucic's remarks were the first detailed Serbian reaction to the arrests on election day in Montenegro of 20 Serbian citizens, including a retired police general, accused of planning attacks on government institutions and officials. The vote, in which veteran Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic's party came out ahead but without a parliamentary majority, was billed as an opportunity for voters to endorse his pro-NATO and pro-EU stance instead of pursuing closer relationships with traditional allies like Serbia and Russia.
