Hong Kong judge warns images of "extreme cruelty" as British banker's trial begins

Jutting, charged with the double murder of two women found in his luxury Hong Kong apartment two years ago, pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of "diminished responsibility" at the outset of the case. The 31-year-old, who studied at Cambridge University and Winchester College, one of Britain's most famous and oldest private schools, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, and to a third charge of preventing lawful burial of a body.




Venezuela congress presses for Maduro trial in rowdy session

The measure is unlikely to get traction as the government and the Supreme Court have systematically undermined the legislature on grounds it is illegitimate until it removes three lawmakers accused of vote-buying. "It is a political and legal trial against President Nicolas Maduro to see what responsibility he has in the constitutional rupture that has broken democracy, human rights, and the future of the country," said opposition majority leader Julio Borges during a special congressional meeting.




Centre-right opposition claims victory in Lithuania vote, to start coalition talks

The Peasants and Greens won 54 seats in the 141-member parliament, making it the biggest party, results published by the Lithuanian election commission showed. "Our government will be transparent, responsible, professional and resolute," Saulius Skvernelis, the man who led the party's election campaign and is now its candidate to be the next prime minister, told Reuters.




South Korea president says time to discuss amending constitution

South Korean President Park Geun-hye delivers her   speech during the inaugural session of the 20th National Assembly in SeoulSouth Korea's President Park Geun-hye said on Monday it is the right time to discuss an amendment to the country's constitution, mainly expected to change the current single-term presidency, before her term is over. "Through the single-term presidency, it is difficult to maintain policy continuance, see results of policy and engage in unified foreign policy," said Park in an address to parliament. The last amendment to the constitution was made in 1987.




Senate to hold hearing on AT&T acquisition of Time Warner

Asian sailors freed by Somali pirates arrive in Kenya for flights home

Some of the 26 Asian sailors released after being   held captives by Somalia pirates for more than four years become emotional as they   as they arrive at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport in the capital NairobiNAIROBI (Reuters) - 26 Asian sailors freed after more than four years of captivity in a small fishing village in Somalia arrived in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Sunday, ahead of flights home, a maritime expert said. The crew from China, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan were seized when the Omani-flagged FV Naham 3 was hijacked by Somali pirates close to the Seychelles in March 2012, when pirate attacks were common in the area. The pirates handed the group to authorities in the northern Somali town of Galkayo on Saturday morning.




Burundi police question U.S. journalist, keep her fixer in custody

Police in Burundi arrested an American journalist and her Burundian fixer on Sunday, saying they had questioned both on suspicion of destroying criminal evidence before releasing only the journalist from custody. Julia Steers, a fellow with the International Women's Media Foundation, and Gildas Yihundimpundu were arrested in the Mutakura district north of the capital Bujumbura, police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye wrote on his Twitter account. Mutakura was hit by protests at the height of the unrest last year when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced plans to run for a third term in office, sparking weeks of protests by the opposition who said his bid was unconstitutional.

Kaine said lawmakers and regulators would have to review the deal and "get to the bottom" of questions over whether the merger would decrease competition. "I'm pro-competition," Kaine said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "Less concentration, I think, is generally helpful especially in the media." Kaine, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's running mate, said he had not had a chance to review the details of the deal.




Two police killed, 19 people wounded in bomb in east Turkey - sources

Two police officers were killed and 19 people were wounded when a car bomb exploded near a passing police vehicle in the eastern Turkish province of Bingol on Sunday, security sources said. The bomb, planted by militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), was detonated near the district governor's office, the security sources said. Five police officers were among the injured, they said.
