Boosted by Wall Street's toughest critics, U.S. senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic candidate has declared "the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top" and said she would raise bank fees and tighten banking regulations.




Saudi prince flogged in court-ordered punishment - newspaper

A prince of Saudi Arabia's ruling Al Saud family was given lashes in a prison in Jeddah as a court-ordered punishment, a Saudi newspaper reported on Wednesday, less than a month after the kingdom executed another prince for murder. A spokesman for the oil-rich Gulf kingdom's Justice Ministry was not immediately available for comment. Saudi Arabia, a leading Arab ally of the United States and the birthplace of Islam, follows the strict Wahhabi Sunni Muslim school and gives the clergy control over its justice system.

Troops have poured into northern Rakhine since militants believed to be Rohingya Muslims launched coordinated attacks on border posts on Oct. 9, killing nine police. Residents and human rights advocates have said abuses by government forces have included summary executions, rape and setting fire to homes.




Najib asks West to stop 'lecturing' as Malaysia embraces China

Malaysia's PM Najib Razak and China's   Premier Li Keqiang attend a signing ceremony in BeijingMalaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said that former colonial powers should not lecture countries they once exploited on their internal affairs, a Chinese newspaper reported on Wednesday, in a veiled attack on the West as he looks to strengthen ties with China. Najib's visit to Beijing follows that of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who announced a "separation" from the United States and signed a raft of memoranda of understanding for Chinese investment in the country. Najib, who is on a six-day visit to China, said in an editorial in the state-run China Daily that larger countries should treat smaller countries fairly.




Vietnam PM orders probe after karaoke blaze kills 13

Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc speaks   during a news conference in HanoiA fire that broke out at a karaoke lounge in Vietnam's capital killed at least 13 people, the government said on Wednesday, in a rare accident of its kind for which the prime minister demanded an investigation and punishment for safety violations. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc "instructed Hanoi police to soon investigate and find the cause as well as to deal strictly with any violations," the government said in an earlier statement. Phuc also asked Hanoi city government to close down karaoke parlours and restaurants which fail to observe fire preventive measures.




Venezuela opposition scraps Maduro trial but presses demands

Venezuela's President Maduro attends a political   meeting between government and opposition in CaracasBy Diego Oré and Fabian Cambero CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela freed four activists and the opposition postponed a symbolic trial in congress of President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday even as it warned it would quit Vatican-backed talks in a matter of days if tough conditions were not met. Maduro met with opposition leaders on Sunday for the start of talks to ease a political standoff between the ruling Socialist Party and the opposition-led parliament during a spiraling economic crisis. As well as suspending its parliamentary proceedings against Maduro, the opposition also agreed to postpone a march planned for Thursday to the presidential palace that the government had described as part of a coup plot.
