| Big Pharma beware: GSK China case may be just the beginning | |  By Adam Jourdan and John Ruwitch SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese corruption charges against executives of British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) could be just the start of the pharmaceutical industry's problems in its biggest emerging drugs market, according to industry sources in China. The charges relating to GSK executives, accused of funnelling hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to doctors and health officials via travel agencies, were announced by Chinese authorities last week, the culmination of a 10-month police investigation. But the GSK case is unlikely to represent closure for the drugs industry in China, which is set to become the world's second-biggest pharmaceutical market behind the United States within three years according to consultancy IMS Health. Drug-company executives, sales staff, lawyers and compliance experts say China's crackdown on drugmakers and other healthcare firms is intensifying as prosecutors grow bolder in the wake of the GSK case, threatening to stymie the growth of any firms caught in the crosshairs of the prolonged corruption crackdown.

The detentions were the first of the inquiry and came five days after a fire sent deadly carbon monoxide coursing through the mine in the western Turkish town of Soma, causing the county's worst ever industrial accident. The disaster has sparked protests across Turkey, directed at mine owners accused of ignoring safety for profit, and at Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government, seen as too close to industry bosses and insensitive in its response. Police formed a cordon around the court house in Soma as a crowd of onlookers, journalists and relatives of those detained grew steadily.

| Mali "at war" after Tuareg separatists abduct 30 civil servants - PM | | | By Adama Diarra KIDAL Mali (Reuters) - Mali's prime minister said his country was at war with Tuareg separatists after the rebels attacked a northern town he was visiting, killing eight soldiers and abducting around 30 civil servants. Some shooting had already broken out before Prime Minister Moussa Mara's arrival in Kidal early on Saturday and he was forced to take shelter in an army base as rebel fighters attacked and seized the regional governor's office. Mali, a former French colony, was thrown into turmoil in 2012 when al Qaeda-linked Islamists took advantage of a Tuareg-led rebellion and seized control of the country's north. A French-led military operation, known as Serval, drove back the Islamists last year but now the Mali government's focus has turned back to the Tuareg rebels. |
| Credit Suisse CEO faces more calls to quit in U.S. tax dispute | |  Credit Suisse Chief Executive Brady Dougan came under further pressure to resign on Sunday, with a key figure in Switzerland's largest party becoming the latest politician to call for a change in the bank's leadership over its role in helping rich Americans dodge tax. Switzerland's second largest lender is expected to plead guilty and pay more than $2.5 billion to U.S. authorities to resolve charges that the Swiss bank helped Americans evade U.S. taxes, people familiar with the discussions said on Thursday. Christoph Blocher, vice president of the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) and an influential billionaire industrialist, told a Swiss newspaper that Dougan, as well as Credit Suisse Chairman Urs Rohner, should step down. "It's shameful how top management are shielding themselves instead of protecting the company from damages." The comments add to pressure on Dougan, after he faced calls to step down from Switzerland's left-wing Social Democrats last week, as well as an appeal from a Centrist BDP politician to consider resigning once the tax case is settled.
