By Serajul Quadir DHAKA (Reuters) - A series of blasts killed at least one person and wounded dozens as Shi'ite Muslims gathered for a procession in the old part of Bangladesh's capital early on Saturday to mark the holy day of Ashura, police said. Islamic State - an ultra-hardline Sunni Muslim group that sees Shi'ites as apostates - claimed responsibility for the attack. Attacks on the Shi'ite minority have been rare in Sunni-majority Bangladesh, but Sunni militant groups have become more active.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Islamic State has claimed responsibility for bombings that targeted Shi'ites in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on Saturday, the monitor group SITE said. It cited Islamic State as saying "soldiers of the Caliphate in Bangladesh" detonated explosive devices in Dhaka during "polytheist rituals". (Reporting by Jeremy Gaunt; Editing by Andrew Heavens)

By Daneil Bosley MALE (Reuters) - Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adheeb was arrested on Saturday in a probe over a speedboat explosion targeting President Abdulla Yameen, police and government officials told Reuters. Yameen, 59, was unhurt in the Sept. 28 blast as his presidential boat Finifenmaa approached the capital Male while he was returning from Saudi Arabia after the haj pilgrimage, but his wife and two aides were injured. "He is now in police custody in Dhoonidhoo detention centre." Home minister Umar Naseer told Reuters: "he is arrested on the charges of assassination attempt." Adheeb's arrest comes after defence minister Moosa Ali Jaleel was sacked by Yameen on Oct. 14, amid a shake up in VIP security after the explosion.

| Russian security forces killed a militant linked to Islamic State in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan early on Saturday, the government's Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAK) said, according to news agencies. Special forces and police found Abdula Nustafaev in a house in the village of Gimry and he was killed when he refused to surrender and opened fire, Interfax reported. NAK, which coordinates anti-terrorism operations, said Nustafaev had been behind an explosion at Irganaiskaya power plant in Dagestan in September 2010 and involved in numerous attempts on the lives of law enforcement officers and civilians. |
