Islamic state claims responsibility for Bangladesh bombings - SITE monitor

Maldives vice president arrested in probe of explosion targeting president

Yameen, 59, was unhurt in the Sept. 28 blast as his presidential boat Finifenmaa approached the capital Male while he was returning from Saudi Arabia after the haj pilgrimage, but his wife and two aides were injured. "He is now in police custody in Dhoonidhoo detention centre." Home minister Umar Naseer told Reuters: "he is arrested on the charges of assassination attempt." Adheeb's arrest comes after defence minister Moosa Ali Jaleel was sacked by Yameen on Oct. 14, amid a shake up in VIP security after the explosion.




Russia says kills Islamic State-linked militant in Dagestan

Russian security forces killed a militant linked to Islamic State in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan early on Saturday, the government's Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAK) said, according to news agencies. Special forces and police found Abdula Nustafaev in a house in the village of Gimry and he was killed when he refused to surrender and opened fire, Interfax reported. NAK, which coordinates anti-terrorism operations, said Nustafaev had been behind an explosion at Irganaiskaya power plant in Dagestan in September 2010 and involved in numerous attempts on the lives of law enforcement officers and civilians.


Blasts in Bangladesh target Shias, kill at least one, wound dozens

By Serajul Quadir DHAKA (Reuters) - A series of blasts targeting Shia Muslims in Dhaka killed at least one person and wounded dozens more early on Saturday as they gathered for a procession in the old part of the Bangladesh capital to mark the holy day of Ashura, police said. At least 10 people were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and most of them were in a stable condition, according to Nazimunnesa, a deputy director. Attacks on the Shia minority have been rare in Sunni majority Bangladesh, but Sunni militant groups have become more active.
