Mali TV shows photos of "authors" of hotel attack

People drive motorcycles past the Radisson Blu hotel   in BamakoBy Tiemoko Diallo and Kissima Diagana BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali state television showed images on Monday of two dead men that it said were the "authors" of an attack by Islamist militants on a luxury hotel in the capital Bamako and appealed for information as to their identity. Twenty people plus two gunmen died in Friday's assault on the Radisson Blu hotel. Jihadist group Al Mourabitoun and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) declared they had carried out the attack in a joint operation against the hotel, a favourite of foreign businessmen and diplomats.

Democrats heaped the most criticism on the New York-based drug maker, with Hillary Clinton accusing Pfizer of using legal loopholes to avoid its "fair share" of taxes in a deal that she said "will leave U.S. taxpayers holding the bag." The front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in the November 2016 election said she will propose steps to prevent more inversions, but she did not provide details. "We cannot delay in cracking down on inversions that erode our tax base," said the ex-U.S. secretary of state and former New York senator in a statement.




Black Lives Matter protesters sue over treatment by California police

By Curtis Skinner SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Protesters and journalists covering a Black Lives Matter rally in Berkeley, California, have filed a lawsuit alleging "unconstitutional police attacks" on attendees, court records showed. The civil rights lawsuit was filed in federal court on Sunday by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the National Lawyers Guild against the city and police of Berkeley and nearby Hayward. The Dec. 6, 2014 march stemmed from the decision days earlier by grand juries in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri, to not criminally charge police officers for killing unarmed, black men, the complaint said.

The State Department has regularly issued such worldwide travel alerts since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. A State Department official said the latest alert, which expires Feb. 24, effectively updated past warnings.




Woman sues Washington for return of JFK assassination film

By Marice Richter DALLAS (Reuters) - A woman whose grandfather shot a home movie of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas' Dealey Plaza on Nov. 22, 1963 is suing the U.S. government to either get it back or get $10 million in compensation. Gayle Nix Jackson filed the lawsuit in federal court on Saturday, a day before the 52nd anniversary of the JFK assassination. Jackson is seeking the original film shot by her deceased grandfather, Orville Nix, or the money.


Black Oregon college student assaulted by three white classmates - police

(Reuters) - The assault of a black Oregon college student by three white students is being investigated by a police hate crime unit and comes days after Portland police received reports of racist threats on social media, authorities said on Monday. The 26-year-old black man was assaulted on Friday night by three white men near the campus pool at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, police said. "The victim told police that the suspect used racial epithets before assaulting him," Portland Police Department spokesman Pete Simpson said in a statement.


FBI investigates violent arrest of fan at Ole Miss football game

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the violent arrest of a fan at University of Mississippi football game after a video showed a security officer punching the man in the face during the arrest, school officials said Monday. The video, which went viral over the weekend, shows two security officers confronting a man in the stands at Saturday's matchup between Ole Miss and Louisiana State University at the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss. The man is identified as Chris Barnes by his wife, Holly Barnes, who posted the video on her Facebook page. In the video, Chris Barnes is smiling during his conversation with the officers when one of them appears to punch or push him, causing him to fall down behind some nearby spectators.


French jets strike Islamic State as Britain offers help

French President Francois Hollande met British Prime Minister David Cameron in Paris on Monday as part of efforts to rally support for the fight against Islamic State and Hollande is also due to visit Washington and Moscow this week.

The meeting was aimed at preparing for public reaction to the video, taken by a patrol car dashboard camera. Also Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the officer will face criminal charges, citing unnamed sources.

"Current information suggests that (Islamic State), al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions," the department said in a warning posted on its website. A State Department official noted that the agency has issued worldwide travel alerts in the past and said this latest alert effectively updated past warnings.




Texas move may delay U.S. Supreme Court immigration case review

Twenty-six Republican-governed states led by Texas sued to stop Obama's 2014 plan to protect millions of illegal immigrants from deportation. Lower courts blocked the executive action, prompting the Justice Department on Friday to launch an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Minneapolis police shooting video inconclusive - governor

Video footage taken from the back of an ambulance does not appear to show conclusively what happened in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a Minneapolis police officer a week ago, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton said on Monday. The shooting of Jamar Clark, 24, on Nov. 15 sparked more than a week of protests amid questions over whether he was handcuffed at the time and demands from protesters that authorities release videos of the incident. "I have seen the tape," Dayton told a news conference.


Shootout that wounded 17 in New Orleans park is gang-related - police

By Kathy Finn NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - A weekend shootout that wounded 17 people, including a 10-year-old boy, in a New Orleans park appears to be gang-related, city officials said on Monday, as they urged hesitant witnesses to come forward with information about the suspects and a motive. The incident unfolded Sunday evening at a playground in the city's Upper 9th Ward where a crowd of as many as 500 people had gathered for a block party and the filming of a music video, police said. Two groups began shooting at each other "with hundreds of people in the way," New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters, adding automatic weapons were fired.


Armed men in military uniform raid Ghana opposition party HQ

By Matthew Mpoke Bigg ACCRA (Reuters) - Armed men in military uniform raided the headquarters of Ghana's main opposition party on Monday in an attack that raises political tension one year ahead of a presidential election that is likely to be closely fought. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) said around 15 men backed by military and police vehicles vandalised its offices in a downtown neighbourhood at around 1 a.m. (0100 GMT), confiscated computer equipment and claimed to have found weapons. It was not clear who conducted the break-in and police spokesman Cephas Arthur told Reuters an initial investigation suggested it was a "civilian raid" rather than one carried out by the security forces.
