|  By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - A suspended deputy U.N. ambassador from the Dominican Republic has asked a U.S. judge to dismiss an indictment accusing him of participating in a bribery scheme, saying he has diplomatic immunity. A lawyer for Francis Lorenzo, 48, filed papers in federal court in Manhattan late on Monday, asking U.S. District Judge Vernon Broderick to dismiss charges including bribery and money laundering facing the diplomat. In the filing, Lorenzo's lawyer, Brian Bieber, cited Lorenzo's status as a deputy ambassador to the United Nations at the time of his Oct. 6 arrest and during the period of alleged wrongdoing in the indictment.

|  By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Florida man who worked at a Wall Street brokerage was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for participating in a massive scheme to bribe officials at Venezuelan state-owned development banks for trading business. Jose Alejandro Hurtado, who prosecutors said was central to connecting New York-based Direct Access Partners with a senior Venezuelan banking official, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan to forfeit nearly $11.9 million. Hurtado, 40, had already served 17 months in prison after his 2013 arrest, according to his lawyers, who had sought a sentence of time served in light of cooperation he provided authorities.

The emailed threat, which authorities said was "routed through Germany" but likely originated locally, was made nearly two weeks after a married couple inspired by Islamic State killed 14 people and wounded 22 others at a county office building 60 miles (100 km) away in San Bernardino. "Based on past circumstance, I could not take the chance," Los Angeles School Superintendent Ramon Cortines told a news conference.

Rafael Callejas, who was president of Honduras from 1990 to 1994 and later became president of its football federation, flashed a thumbs-up to someone in the audience as he left a hearing in federal court in Brooklyn, New York. Juan Angel Napout, a Paraguayan and former president of the South American confederation CONMEBOL, pleaded not guilty at a separate hearing.

"We demand the definitive resignation of Marco Polo Del Nero and his directors, followed by free and democratic elections for leadership of the CBF," said the letter, signed by 127 people and published by Juca Kfouri, a journalist and one of the signatories.
