Belgium to extradite Paris suspect Abdeslam to France

Armed Belgian police secure the area upon their   arrival in Molenbeek, near BrusselsA Belgian court decided on Thursday that Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam could be extradited to France, Belgium's federal prosecutors said. A lawyer for Abdeslam said earlier that Abdeslam had dropped his initial objection to being extradited and had also renewed an offer to cooperate with French authorities investigating the Nov. 13 attacks that killed 130 people. "Salah Abdeslam wishes to be transferred to the French authorities," lawyer Cedric Moisse told reporters.




Multiple people injured at Virginia bus station, suspected gunman dead - media

Multiple people including two state troopers were taken to a Richmond, Virginia, hospital for treatment on Thursday following a shooting at a bus station and the suspected gunman was killed, according to police and local media. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said she did not know the nature or severity of the injuries to the troopers. Local television WTVR CBS 6, citing unnamed sources, said the suspect has died.

Trump, who also has struggled to contain the fallout from his comments on Wednesday in support of punishing women for having an abortion, said on Twitter afterward he had a "nice meeting" with RNC Chairman Reince Preibus but divulged no details. "And it will happen!" Trump's relationship with the RNC has been contentious at times, and he recently complained the party was not treating him fairly as it made preparations for a possible contested convention in July in Cleveland.

The United Nations on Wednesday said it has expanded an investigation of new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by foreign peacekeepers in Central African Republic (CAR) and notified authorities in France, Gabon and Burundi about the accusations against their troops.




Brazil's top court upholds removing Lula probe from federal judge

Former Brazilian President Lula da Silva arrives to a   news conference with international media in Sao PauloA majority of Brazil's Supreme Court members voted on Thursday to uphold an injunction that moved a corruption investigation of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from to the Supreme Court from a lower court. The top court decision overruled a decision by federal judge Sergio Moro to make public a wiretap recording of a conversation between Lula and President Dilma Rousseff regarding his appointment to her Cabinet as her chief of staff. The Supreme Court is expected to discuss next week the suspension of Lula's appointment by one of its justices on the basis that it was a move to shield him from prosecution.




South Africa's top court orders Zuma to reimburse state

The unanimous ruling by the 11-judge constitutional court, a central pillar of the democracy established at the end of apartheid, also said Zuma had failed to "uphold, defend and respect" the constitution by ignoring Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's findings on his sprawling residence at Nkandla in rural KwaZulu-Natal. In 2014, Madonsela, a constitutionally mandated anti-corruption watchdog, identified a swimming pool, cattle enclosure, chicken run, amphitheatre and visitor centre as non-security items that Zuma must pay for.

"Belgium has accepted our assistance. Rhodes said the Belgian interior minister was expected to discuss the security cooperation with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch during the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington this week.




Turkey detains suspected killer of downed Russian pilot - report

Turkish authorities have detained a man suspected of killing a Russian pilot after his plane was shot down by a Turkish jet near the Syrian-Turkish border last November, Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper reported on Thursday. Russian defence officials said at the time that the pilot had managed to eject from his stricken plane only to be killed by ground fire from militants inside Syria. It was not immediately clear whether the reported arrest of the man, whom Hurriyet identified as Alparslan Celik, a fighter from a Turkish-backed Turkmen brigade in Syria, had been made in connection with the killing of the pilot.

At a joint summit in Brussels, held after delays imposed by Italy, the Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi and EU leaders maintained their positions over the case. In 2012, India arrested two Italian marines who were escorting an oil tanker on suspicion of shooting dead two fishermen they mistook for pirates.




Indians mobilise to break free from forced, bonded labour - Harvard study

Labourers work inside an embroidery factory in New   DelhiBy Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Victims of forced or bonded labour in north India can break free from exploitation if they mobilise and exercise their collective power to demand enforcement of labour protection laws and social welfare entitlements, a Harvard survey said on Thursday. The survey, which reviewed the work of local charity Manav Sansadhan Evam Mahila Vikas Sansthan (MSEMVS) in Uttar Pradesh, found steps such as forming community groups and raising awareness of laws and government welfare schemes significantly helped to reduce debt and improve lives. "Interviews with community members highlighted MSEMVS's contribution to reducing indebtedness and threats of violence, improving wage levels and generating a sense of collective efficacy," the study by Harvard University's FXB Center for Health and Human Rights said.
