11:06:24 PM

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron speaks after Britain voted to leave the European Union, outside Number 10 Downing Street in LondonBy Guy Faulconbridge and Kate Holton LONDON (Reuters) - Britain has voted to leave the European Union, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow since World War Two to the European project of forging greater unity. Global stock markets plunged on Friday, and the British pound saw its biggest one day drop in history, as results from a referendum defied bookmakers' odds to show a 52-48 percent victory for the campaign to leave the bloc Britain joined more than 40 years ago. The United Kingdom itself could now break apart, with the leader of Scotland, where nearly two-thirds of voters wanted to stay in the EU, saying a new referendum on independence from the rest of Britain was "highly likely".

10:52:45 PM

U.S. President Obama leaves after delivering a statement after the Supreme Court left in place a lower court ruling blocking his plan to spare millions of illegal immigrants from deportation and give them work permits at the White House in WashingtonBy Ayesha Rascoe WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday said the United States remains committed to bringing home Americans held captive overseas and helping their families, a year after the administration promised to overhaul its handling of hostage situations. "We will not stop until we can bring our fellow citizens back to their families," Obama said in a statement on the anniversary of the White House's policy review. Obama specifically named journalist Austin Tice who disappeared in Syria in 2012, Caitlan Coleman held in Afghanistan, and retired FBI agent Robert Levinson, who went missing in Iran more than nine years ago.

The so-called Erskine Fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in the foothills of Kern County about 42 miles (68 km) northeast of Bakersfield, and three firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, officials said. The fire has led hundreds of residents to evacuate and the Kern County Fire Department said on Friday afternoon two people had died, though it did not identify the people or release further details.

Global doping agency suspends Rio lab weeks before Olympics
8:27:56 PM

A journalist walks in front of a screen with olympics logos during the medal launching ceremony in Rio de JaneiroBy Pedro Fonseca RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has suspended the credentials of a testing laboratory in Rio de Janeiro for failing to comply with international standards, just over a month before the city hosts the Olympic Games. Although the suspension adds to embarrassments for Brazil in the run-up to the Olympics, it is unlikely to affect the Games since the agency has arranged testing elsewhere, as it did when the same Rio lab lost its credentials before the 2014 World Cup. The lab at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro said on Friday that its operations should return to normal in July after a technical visit from WADA, ahead of the start of the Games on Aug. 5.

Former mob boss and fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger is seen in a booking mug combination photoBy Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - A sterling silver skull ring, a fake Stanley Cup ring and a pen holder shaped like a rat have drawn the most interest from bidders in Saturday's auction of former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger's possessions, officials said. Bulger, now 86, ruled Boston's underworld for a quarter-century before fleeing in 1994 after a corrupt FBI agent tipped him that arrest was imminent.
