The British currency fell as much nine percent to a 30-year-low below $1.35, marking a sharper dive even than on 'Black Wednesday' in 1992 when financier George Soros was instrumental in pushing the pound out of the Exchange Rate Mechanism that predated the euro. In a mark of international concern, Japan's top currency diplomat Masatsugu Asakawa said he would consult with Finance Minister Taro Aso on how to respond to the market movements, describing them as very rough.

The court, in a 4-3 ruling written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, decided in favor of the university and turned aside the conservative challenge to a policy intended to foster racial and ethnic diversity on campus. The ruling ended an eight-year legal challenge to the affirmative action admissions system used by the University of Texas at Austin brought by Abigail Fisher, who was denied a place in 2008.

Addressing the permanent council of the 34-nation Organization of American States (OAS), Almagro argued that Maduro's government had violated basic democratic principles, which had altered the constitutional order of the country.

Mateen, 29, was killed by police after he took hostages during a three-hour standoff inside the Pulse nightclub. It did not give Mateen's cause of death, the Sentinel reported.

Pena Nieto has made the push for tougher anti-corruption laws a top priority of his government, which has been embroiled in several conflict-of-interest scandals and accused by critics of a lax attitude toward graft. "The presentation of the declarations of millions and millions of Mexicans who ... earn their living honestly would in no way help combat corruption," Castillejos said in a live broadcast, adding the measure violated protections for personal data and human rights.

| Baltimore judge clears second officer in Freddie Gray death | |  By Donna Owens BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson Jr. on Thursday became the second officer cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of injuries sustained while in police custody. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams found Goodson, who is also black, not guilty of all criminal counts including second-degree "depraved heart" murder, the most serious accusation against any of the six officers charged in connection with Gray's death. Gene Ryan, the head of Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, praised the judge's decision and called on the State's Attorney for Baltimore, Marilyn Mosby, to drop the cases against the other officers.

| Fiat Chrysler accused of concealing defect in Jeep Grand Cherokee | |  By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Jeep Grand Cherokee owners on Thursday filed suit in California against Fiat Chrysler , accusing the automaker of concealing a shifter design defect linked to driverless rollaway accidents, including this week's death of "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin. The class-action complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Riverside, California, east of Los Angeles, also alleges the automaker tried to cover up hundreds of related accidents that caused injuries and property damage and has dragged its feet in furnishing a remedy for the issue. "In light of the stigma attached to those vehicles by (Fiat Chrysler's) conduct, they are now worth significantly less than they otherwise would be," the lawsuit states.
