| Global doping agency suspends Rio lab weeks before Olympics | | By Pedro Fonseca RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has suspended the credentials of a testing laboratory in Rio de Janeiro for failing to comply with international standards, just over a month before the city hosts the Olympic Games. Although the suspension adds to embarrassments for Brazil in the run-up to the Olympics, it is unlikely to affect the Games since the agency has arranged testing elsewhere, as it did when the same Rio lab lost its credentials before the 2014 World Cup. The lab at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro said on Friday that its operations should return to normal in July after a technical visit from WADA, ahead of the start of the Games on Aug. 5.

Global financial markets plunged on Friday as results from a referendum defied bookmakers' odds to show a 52-48 percent victory for the campaign to leave a bloc Britain joined more than 40 years ago. The United Kingdom itself could now break apart, with the leader of Scotland - where nearly two-thirds of voters wanted to stay in the EU - saying a new referendum on independence from the rest of Britain was "highly likely".

The "Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act" was introduced by nine House members representing diverse states stretching from Hawaii to Delaware, including some who have led the gun control fight for years. "If you can't get on a plane because of the danger that may pose, there is no reason you should be able to purchase a dangerous weapon," said Republican Representative Carlos Curbelo of Florida, in a refrain that has ricocheted through the U.S. Capitol since the June 12 mass shooting in Orlando.

Now, the British leader's closest rival - in the EU referendum, in the Conservative Party and in the country - is the frontrunner to take his job. | U.S. Navy captain involved in seizure by Iran relieved of command | | | A U.S. Navy captain who was in charge of 10 American sailors briefly held by Iran in January has been relieved of command because of a "loss of confidence in his ability to command," a Navy statement said on Friday. Ten U.S. sailors, who were aboard two patrol craft, were detained by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Jan. 12 when they inadvertently entered Iranian territorial waters. In May, Commander Eric Rasch, who was the executive officer of the coastal riverine squadron that included the 10 sailors, was fired. |
