Russia says Syria should look at gas attacks, dimming sanctions hopes

The 15-member council met behind closed doors to discuss the findings of an inquiry by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which blamed the Syrian government for three toxic gas attacks.




Egypt's Sisi pledges reviews of protest law, detentions

Speaking at a youth conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, the former general said a committee would review the cases of young people held in pretrial detention and present its findings in two weeks so the presidency could take appropriate action. Sisi does not have the authority to interfere in the judicial process in Egypt but is able to issue pardons.

The late-night exchange between Robby Mook, Clinton's campaign manager, and John Podesta, the campaign chairman, happened within hours of the New York Times breaking the news that Clinton exclusively used a private email account in a way that may have broken records rules. "Did you have any idea of the depth of this story?" Podesta wrote to Mook at 10:27 p.m. on the night the Times story appeared online, according to an exchange published by WikiLeaks.




Court clears Icahn's CVR to sue Wachtell law firm for malpractice

The 5-0 decision by the Appellate Division in Manhattan frees CVR to contest whether Wachtell should have revealed how Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Deutsche Bank AG , which were helping it defend against Icahn's tender offer, stood to earn far higher fees if the takeover bid actually succeeded.




Turkey says gives U.S. new documents on Gulen extradition request

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that in a meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch in Washington on Wednesday he gave U.S. authorities three new folders of evidence they had sought over Turkey's accusations against Gulen. Bozdag described his meeting with Lynch as "fruitful," saying it helped the two sides better understand each other's positions.

India, Pakistan to expel diplomats amid Kashmir tension

India said it would expel a Pakistani diplomat based in New Delhi who allegedly ran a spy ring that collected sensitive information about Indian security operations along its border. Late on Thursday night, Pakistan's foreign ministry said it had declared an Indian diplomat, Surjeet Singh, persona non grata and given him 48 hours to leave the country.




French judge to investigate disappearance of Franco-Syrians in Syria

A French judge will investigate the disappearance in Syria of a father and son of dual French and Syrian citizenship, a judicial source said, in the first French probe into crimes for which rights groups blame the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The investigation into alleged torture, forced disappearance and crime against humanity was opened following a complaint filed on Monday by two rights groups and Obeida Dabbagh, brother and uncle to the missing pair, Patrick and Mazzen Dabbagh. "It is time that judicial authorities in other countries investigated the crimes committed by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad," the FIDH and LDH rights groups said in a statement.

Violence flares in Turkey's tense southeast after mayors' arrest

A soldier was killed by a homemade explosive device in Bingol, 140 km (85 miles) north of Diyarbakir, and a member of a state-backed militia was killed in Batman province to the east.

"Nicolas Maduro is responsible for everything happening in our country," said Brigit Duarte, adding that her son had been wrongly shot dead in a raid.




Putin says US "hysteria" over Russia is election ploy

Putin, addressing an audience of foreign policy experts gathered in southern Russia, repeatedly lashed out at the Obama administration, saying it did not keep its word on Syria, did not honour deals, and had falsely accused Moscow of all manner of sins. The U.S. government has formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organisations, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has accused Republican rival Donald Trump of being a Putin "puppet".

The raid came hours after a city order banned all public gatherings ahead of Khan's planned protest set to begin on Nov. 2 in what he described as a final push to force Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign over corruption allegations. Khan has said it will defy the order, raising the stakes in a political standoff.

In a letter to the 15-member council, seen by Reuters on Thursday, Ban said 755 South Sudanese rebels had crossed into Congo's Garamba National Park with opposition leader Riek Machar in August.
