Senior Egyptian general shot dead outside home

A senior Egyptian military official was shot dead on Saturday outside his home on the outskirts of Cairo, security sources and his wife said Gunmen opened fire on Brigadier General Adel Rajaaie, an armoured division commander who had served in troubled northern Sinai, as he left his home in Obour city to go to work, his wife told Reuters. A newly-emerged militant group calling itself Louwaa el Thawra, or the Revolution Brigade, claimed responsibility for the attack on a Twitter account that was suspended shortly after the claim. Rajaaie, 52, is the most senior military official to be assassinated since the toppling of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in mid-2013 by general-turned-president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

It is the first of Mursi's four convictions to reach the end of the judicial process, and he cannot appeal further against it. Twenty-year jail sentences were also confirmed against other senior figures from the then-ruling Muslim Brotherhood, including Mohamed el-Beltagy and Essam el-Erian.




White substance found at Clinton office not hazardous - police

The substance arrived through the mail at Clinton's campaign office in Manhattan, and was transported to the headquarters in Brooklyn Heights, police said. The floor was evacuated as a precaution, and several people were exposed to the substance.




Belgian shopping mall evacuated as three gunmen rob jewellery store

A Belgian shopping centre was evacuated on Saturday after three masked robbers, armed with at least one Kalashnikov rifle, burst into a jewellery store in Chatelineau, 50 km (35 miles) south of Brussels, police said. Police escorted dozens of shoppers out of the Cora mall, some of whom confused the sound of glass jewellery display cases being smashed with that of gunfire, police commissioner Eric De Brabander said. Earlier, Mayor Daniel Vanderlick told the local RTL News that gunshots had been fired with a Kalashnikov.

It has also led to the rise of ultra-royalist vigilante groups who say they will punish anyone perceived to have insulted the monarchy during a highly sensitive time for Thailand.
