Oregon legalizes recreational marijuana as campaign spreads |
|
By Shelby Sebens PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - Smoking and growing small amounts of marijuana became legal in Oregon on Wednesday, as a growing legalization movement spread down the United States' west coast. A law allowing recreational use, backed by voters in November, came into effect at midnight, opening the way for marijuana to be sold in shops by next year - though some lawmakers say they will still try to block retail outlets. Similar legislation is already in force in Alaska and Washington State, reflecting a shifting legal landscape for a drug that remains illegal under federal law. |

President Xi Jinping has said China's security covers areas including politics, culture, the military, the economy, technology and the environment.

Sri Lanka's Rajapaksa to stand for Prime Minister in Aug 17 polls |
|
Former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa said he would run for prime minister during next month's parliamentary elections, a move that is likely to infuriate rights groups as he is accused of war crimes in a civil war. "I accept the request to contest the election," Rajapaksa said on Wednesday, referring to the Aug. 17 parliamentary polls when the island nation is set to choose its prime minister. President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the leader of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), has rejected Rajapaksa's demand to name him as the prime ministerial candidate in the party, which Rajapaksa led for 10 years until his election defeat this year.
